Venus Williams has cruised into the second round of the US Open by defeating her countrywoman Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the opening round. Venus won the match in the straight sets by 6-3, 6-1. Venus looked in fine form and she absolutely demolished Bethanie. In the post match interview, Venus said that the conditions were very tough. It was pretty windy out here and it was not easy to bring power into the shots. But, she is happy that everything went according to the plan and she won the match easily. On being asked about her opponent, Venus said that she has played against Bethanie before and Bethanie has always been a tough competitor.  But, she was not at her best today.

Venus didn’t manage to start the match well. Her service was broken by Bethanie in the very first game of the first set. Bethanie held her service in the second game to take a lead of 2-0. But, Venus levelled the score by sneaking a breakthrough in the 4th game. Venus broke Bethanie’s service again in the 6th game and got ahead in the set by 4-2. The American superstar held her service in the 7th game and the 9th game to grab the first set by 6-3. In the second set, Venus was in a destructive mood. Both the players held their service in the first two games and the scores were levelled at 1-1 at the end of the 2nd game. But, after that, Venus gave no chance to Bethanie. She broke Bethanie’s service thrice in the second set and won the last five games in a row to seal the match. In the second round, Venus will play against Angelique Kerber who made her way to the second round with an easy victory over Anne Keothavong of Britain.
