GarbineMuguruza blazed past Magda Linette to reach the last eight at the ongoing Wuhan Open in China. The top ranked Spaniard beat her Polish competition 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 on Wednesday to advance. Muguruza started off very well against the No. 83 Linette, using just 30 minutes to wrap up the first set in her favour.

Muguruza expected to wrap up the game in the second set but Linettestunned, fighting back to take the set by even better margin of 6-1. She won the first five games before a brief pause for the roof to be closed because of rain. Muguruza gradually fought her way back but Linette soon killed the set.

Muguruza fought back to win the third set and would now face French Open winner JelenaOstapenko in the next round. Ostapenko also had to fight hard to overcome eight seed Monica Puig. She won the first set 6-2 but the Puerto Rican fought back to win the second set 3-6 before Ostapenko sealed her win in the third set 6-3 as well.
Ostapenko would need to do better when she faces Muguruza as she had seven double faults and almost allowed Puig come back into the game in the third set.

In other games, Ashleigh Barty continued her top form as she defeated ninth seed AgnieszkaRadwanska 4-6, 6-0, 6-4. She broke her rival’s serve six times. She would meet a tough competitor in Karolina Pliskova next. Radwanska was the second straight top 20 player she sent packing but Pliskova would be a real challenge after the top ranked player beat Wang Qiang 6-2, 6-1. It was China’s Wang that defeated the US Open champ Sloane Stephens.

Ekaterina Makarova of Russia and Maria Sakkari also made the last eight after seeing off DariaKasatkina and Elena Vesnina respectively.
