Rafael Nadal has won the Barcelona Open tennis tournament by defeating his compatriot Nicolas Almagro in the final match. Nadal won the match in the straight sets by 6-4, 6-3.
Nadal who was given the second seed in this event took just 92 minutes to finish off the match.
This was the 10th match between these two players and Nadal has defeated Almagro in all the 10 matches.
In the post match interview, Nadal said, “I am glad to become the champion of this tournament again. Every tournament that I have won after my come back means a lot to me and this one is no different.”
“The conditions were not easy at all especially, in the initial parts of the first set. Big rain drops were coming down and I was having a lot of problems. But, slowly, I settled down.”
“When you have a straight set victory over a guy like Nicolas in the title round, it gives you a lot of contentment. I was really expecting it to be a close match. But, thankfully, Nicolas didn’t get it right today.”
Nadal didn’t have a great start in the opening set. His serve was broken twice successively in the first 3 games and he was down by 0-3. However, he bounced back in style from there and with breakthroughs in the 4th and the 6th game; he won the next four games in a row to take the lead of 4-3.
The next couple of games went with the serve and at the end of the 9th game; the score was 5-4 in Nadal’s favour.
The Spaniard got his third breakthrough in the set in the 10th game and sealed the set with that.
In the second set, Nadal got a breakthrough in the 4th game to take a lead of 3-1. After that, he held his serve in the 5th, 7th and 9th game and won the match.
Venus Williams has said that she wants to win Wimbledon Championship again before retiring from the game. Venus has already won the Wimbledon Championship 5 times in her career.
Venus is currently ranked at no. 21 in the official rankings of WTA. She was at the no. 1 position at one point of time in her career, but, a couple of years back, she suffered from a disease called Sjogren’s syndrome. This disease makes a person lose its energy rapidly.
Because of that disease, Venus had to miss a lot of games and her world ranking came down drastically. However, she recovered from that a few months ago and her ranking is improving day by day now.
Recently, she has helped USA winning a Fed Cup clash against Sweden by defeating Johanna Larsson in the second reverse singles match.
Since the last 10 months or so, there have been continuous rumours about Venus’ retirement. However, she has always denied it.
Venus got frustrated when she was asked about retirement once again. She said, “Wherever I go, I am asked this question and it’s really frustrating. I have already said several times before that I don’t have retirement in my mind at all. I will think about retirement only when I lose the interest in the game.”
“I have to achieve some targets before quitting the game and the first in that list is to become the Wimbledon Champion again.”
When asked about her fitness, she said, “My fitness is improving gradually and I can feel my energy level going up every day.”
“The only problem for me is that I love eating sweet things and the Sjogren’s patients shouldn’t do that. They should be eating green vegetables and should take as less sugar as possible. I have cut down my sugar intake, but, still, it’s more than the limit. However, one thing is certain. I am never going to stop having Jamba Juice.”
Venus Williams has withdrawn her name from the Sony Open. Venus had to play against her countrywoman Sloane Stephens in the third round match, but, because of an injury in her lower back, the 32 years old American player decided not to participate in the match.
Venus had defeated Kimiko Date-Krumm of Japan in the second round of this tournament. She had to battle hard for that victory though. She had won the match by 7-6 (7/3), 3-6, 6-4.
On Saturday, Venus announced that she was struggling with back pain and she wouldn’t take part in the third round match.
Talking to the reporters, Venus said, “Yesterday, I had a bit of pain in my back, but, it was not that bad. But, today, it worsened. During the warm up, I couldn’t move fluently. There was no point going into the match in that condition. So, I decided to withdraw.”
“It doesn’t feel good at all. This is a big event and you want to perform well in such kind of events.”
Venus has won Sony Open three times in her career and she was eyeing for her fourth title at Miami.
Venus said that she is expecting to get fit before the Family Circle Cup that will be played in April at Charleston, South Carolina.
Venus said, “I don’t think it will take me too many days to get rid of this injury. I am hoping to be alright for the Family Circle Cup.”
Sloane Stephens got a walkover in the third round because of Venus’ withdrawal. In the next round, Stephens will face the Polish player Agnieszka Radwanska who reached the fourth round by beating Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia in a tight match.
Radwanska was the winner of Sony Open last year.
